An unlikely duo, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, blessed America with a soulful story of two musicians. Theaters have been sold out since the movie’s debut on October 5, 2018, however I was lucky enough to catch a late showing last night. I would never claim to be a movie critic, in fact I truly dislike venturing to the cinema to spend $40 on popcorn and a seat that's been shared by god knows how many other strangers’ behinds. But, I couldn’t help myself. For weeks I have seen endless posts from friends, in tears, sharing how A Star Is Born had ripped their hearts out. As a sucker for a good sob story, and a fan of music, I decided I had to see for myself.
After the first time I saw a commercial for the movie my first thought was: this is going to be such a mediocre performance considering Bradley Cooper might be best known for his role in The Hangover. My second thought was: Can Lady Gaga act? I know she can sing but does she really think she can pull this off? I was truly mistaken. Cooper played a character that had so much depth. His character, Jackson Maine, was so far from any role he has ever played before. At times I forgot that I was watching Bradley Cooper because he sincerely had me believing that he was a rugged, tortured musician on the road. As for Miss Gaga, I fell in love with her character, Ally; the unforeseen super star that was discovered in a drag bar on the seedy side of town. Her character was humble and shy yet her passion was strong and her love for Jack was infinite.
The story went as such: the wallflower falls for the road rambling rock star that thrusts her into the spotlight thus revealing her talents to the world. As fame creeps up on Ally, Jack must find a way to cope with her absence and finds relief in poisons of all kinds. Yet throughout the peaks and pits, Ally and Jackson’s love never dies. The kicker comes at the end, one you and I both would not totally expect. But all in all, this story is one that no one should miss. Given the authority of a movie critic, I would give the film a solid 9.9/10 but as a friend I must advise; bring tissues.
