Going into college I had no idea what to expect. I was scared, anxious but most of all excited. I was excited to start this new chapter of my life. The only problem was I had no idea what I was going to major in.
I went into my freshman year undecided thinking it wasn't a big deal. That was until everyone around me knew exactly their major and what they wanted to do with it. It was intimidating and I felt embarrassed that I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life.
Feeling the pressure of my parents and my friends I settled and majored in business marketing. I thought by choosing a major that it would solve all my problems. Boy was I wrong. For the next two and a half years I watched as my friends excelled in their majors. It was hard seeing everyone loving what they were doing, not in a selfish way, I just knew I needed to find something I was passionate about. I knew business wasn't what I was supposed to do.
I built up enough courage and finally told my parents how unhappy I was in school. It was tough because I knew I was letting them down in a way, but I also knew that I needed to do what would make me happy. Luckily, my parents weren't disappointed, instead they supported me and my decision.
I went into my second semester of junior year with a clear head and a new major...PUBLIC RELATIONS and I haven't looked back since. I finally feel like I belong and that I'm doing something that I enjoy. In such a short amount of time, Gaylord college has become one of my favorite places. The people, faculty and atmosphere are unbeatable. The amount of effort and passion the teachers at Gaylord put into their work and into their students is top notch. I have never felt close to any of my professors until I got into Gaylord.
I see too many people in college just going through the motions, not enjoying what they're doing. I was even one of those people. Instead of following the crowd and pleasing others, I made a decision for me. Sometimes its good to be selfish. At the end of the day you have to do what will make you happy because if you're not happy with what you're doing then what's the point?
